Star Grad Cap Kit

About

Inspired by my previous Space Graduation Caps.

I’m working on making this a kit for sewable star shaped LED sequins, because I’ve gotten a few requests.

Design

These use WS2811-style LEDs, but instead of red, green, and blue LEDs, they come with Warm White, Cool White, and Amber LEDs. I selected these to be able to simulate the different color temperatures of real stars.

The board is cut into cute star shaped sequin designs, meant for sewing to fabric with conductive thread. I am currently investigating other options, because I have found so far that conductive thread can be very picky and inconsistent, and is not very well suited for beginners in soft circuits. I want this kit to be accessible (perhaps in the form of different options) to anyone - even those with little craft and electrical experience.

The initial proof of concept kit was worn by my friend Zarin for her high school graduation. We wired and tested the LEDs, then added an impressionistic rendition of an open star cluster, inspired by NGC 290 for its wide range of star colors.
